DINE LIKE A DIPLOMATE

In one of the most famous scenes in the contemporary classic film Titanic, the main character Jack is invited to a formal dinner and faces a challenge with which you may be familiar:

Jack [about his silverware during dinner]: Are these all for me?

Molly Brown: Just start from the outside and work your way in.

In general, there are 3 “rules” to remember when trying to survive a dining engagement:

  1. Watch What Your Host Does
  2. BMW: Bread, Meal, Water
  3. Start From the Outside and Work Your Way In

However, if you decide to go beyond merely surviving and learn all the rules of dining etiquette (i.e. the dos and don’ts), you will feel confident no matter the occasion and location – from the local hot dog joint to the White House, from Europe to America, and from a social event after work to a networking engagement.
